Kick-off Funding

Kick-off Funding

The Kick-off Funding line helps Humboldt-Universität build its research profile and develop its faculties strategically. The aim is to establish research priorities in the faculties and to integrate them into the overall targets of the University’s Institutional Strategy "Educating Enquiring Minds". A further aim is to raise Humboldt-Universität’s visibility in the international research landscape and to attract more third-party funding.

IMPORTANT: Currently there is no call for applications in this funding line

Who can apply?

What are the relevant criteria?

The funding is based on a concept for which the dean is responsible. The concept should set out the faculty’s objectives and describe which areas are to be improved by Institutional Strategy funding. Institutes, departments and interdisciplinary centres may also initiate a project. Inter-faculty applications and proposals for projects with non-university partners are also welcome.

What kind of funding is provided?

The following are examples of how Kick-off Funding can be used:

  • workshops that help to shape the faculty’s research profile (up to € 7,000)
  • international congresses that raise HU’s visibility and generate impetus for research projects (up to € 30,000)
  • setting up a temporary position for a research officer who will provide support on profile building (full-time, public sector pay scale 13 up to € 60,000)
  • in some cases, temporary leave from teaching duties; this must clearly serve the enhancement of the faculty’s research profile (substitutes must have proven comparable qualifications).

This list is by no means exhaustive. Please note, however, that large-scale equipment cannot be financed under this programme due to the limited amount of funding available. In general, start-up funding for research projects should be provided by the funding lines specifically set up for this purpose.

What is the application procedure?

  1. Presentation of the concept by the dean using the application form
  2. Interview with the Executive Committee, which will then decide on the application
  3. Report at the Concilium Decanale following the decision by the University management and after the measures have been completed.
