Humboldt-Universität is creating opportunities for research in the summer semester 2019
The Creating Opportunities funding line opens up time for reflection and concentration on new research concepts, as well as the opportunity to exchange ideas, to read and to write without the distraction of everyday responsibilities.

As an individual funding opportunity, this funding line allows a free choice of topic and thereby makes a statement against current trends in the orientation of research towards large funding structures and formats.

Funded researchers receive a reduction of teaching to 0 SWS for the summer semester 2019 and are substituted for a semester by a guest professor (for professors) or one or more teaching assignments (early career researchers). The time gained is used for intensive and concentrated exploration and further development of a new research proposal or for exploring a radically new research topic. On completion, the funded researchers will have written up or published on a research idea or new research topics, or else set them on track to become a research project.

Who can apply?
Professors and early career researchers in all subject areas who are currently working at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin are eligible to apply. The positions of early career teachers must contain teaching duties (additional teaching assignments are excluded).

What is funded?
Research proposals from individual people will be funded.

Funded applicants receive a reduction of teaching to 0 SWS for the summer semester 2019. To compensate for the absence of teaching, the HU, through means of the future concept, supplies the costs of a guest professor or teaching assignment(s). The applicant, together with the institute, is responsible for organising the guest professorship or substitute teaching.

The time gained is used for intensive and concentrated exploration and further development of a new research proposal or for exploring a radically new research topic.

During the funding period, funded professors organise a public event on their research project and, in the following semester, offer a course incorporating the results of their research. This requirement does not apply to the early career teachers.

Once the funding period has ended, funded applicants submit a project report (2 pages). The report documents the extent to which the project aim set out in the application has been achieved and, moreover, whether further progress has been made in the research and, if applicable, teaching.

Selection process
Selection criteria include the quality and originality of the project idea, the alignment of the project with the aims of the funding line, the plausibility of the work schedule, as well as the suitability of the teaching substitute. The amount of teaching duties has no impact on the selection. The process for professors and early career researchers is separate, with six applicants selected for each sub-line, resulting in twelve funded research projects.

Funding will be granted to:

  • the four most persuasive applicants, as well as
  • two further applicants, selected by random ballot.

Documents to be submitted

  • Concept outline (max. 1,000 words), which should include a brief description of the research proposal and the expected results, as well as a short self-evaluation of the alignment of the project with the aims of the funding line
  • Application form signed by the dean
  • Firm work schedule
  • C.V. of the applicant (including a list of fellowships, research collaborations, peer review activities, prizes / accolades, third-party funds raised and publications)
  • C.V. of the teaching substitute
