Information About the Online Application Process

Welcome to the application process for a Humboldt Post-Doc Scholarship. Please read the information on this page carefully before submitting your application.

To access the application form, you first need to register. You create an applicant profile when you register and then receive access to a password-protected section for applicants. Once registered, applicants can log in directly.

General information

You can interrupt the process of filling in the online application form at any time. Please save the data you have entered before.

Please enter all information completely and truthfully. Applicants who enter false information will be excluded from the rest of the selection process.

All information in the application portal can be entered in German or English.

Data is entered and transmitted via secure internet connections to ensure that third parties cannot view your data. You can check and amend your data as you enter the information.

The fields marked with an exclamation mark (!) are mandatory fields.

You will need to upload the following documents in the application portal:

  • Curriculum vitae (max. 2 pages)
  • Certificates of your degree results
  • Copy of your PhD certificate
  • One to three key publications

Documents can be uploaded in PDF or JPEG format. If you have more than one document for a category, please combine them into one file (max. 5 MB).

Academic qualifications

Your curriculum vitae should include information on your academic experience and your extracurricular activities (max. 2 pages).

Please list your academic qualifications, starting with your highest degree. You will need to upload digital copies of your certificates. If you have not yet completed your PhD, please submit proof of your expected finishing date (e.g. confirmation of the date of your thesis defense from the PhD or examination office).

Please include a certified translation of any documents that are not written in German or English. If your application is successful you will be asked to present the originals of these documents. 

Please also provide details of your experience abroad, e.g. stays in other countries or joint publications or research projects with international partners.

Please submit one to three key publications in PDF format.

Research project

The aim of the Humboldt Post-Doc Scholarships is to help recipients prepare for a postdoctoral project or to make an application for third-party funding, so we do not expect a final description of the project. Please submit a general outline of your proposal (max. 5,000 characters). This is primarily to provide the interdisciplinary selection board that will make the final decision on your application with information about the key objectives of your proposal.

Please state your preferred partner at Humboldt Universität for the proposed project. If you receive funding for a project proposal, please provide the name of the third-party funding source and the funding line.


Your application should include a letter of recommendation from the supervisor or first assessor of your PhD thesis.

Please also enter your referee’s name and institute in the online form and send them the relevant form for completion.

Your referee is requested to send the letter of recommendation directly to the address below. The subject line of the letter must include the name of the funding line and the name of the applicant.

Sending your online application

You can check and, if necessary, amend the information you have entered at any time. Once you have entered all the information completely and correctly in the online form, please send us your application. You can no longer make any amendments once you have submitted your application! If we receive more than one application from you, we will only consider the last one received.

Participation in the evaluation of the Humboldt Post-Doc Scholarship

Humboldt-Universität is obliged to evaluate the funding lines of the Excellence Initiative. With the submission of your application you agree to take part in surveys for these evaluations.
